if you think neutrophils are decreased because there is bone marrow disease, what other CBC paremeters should be low?
- platelets
- RBCs
(all cell lines affected)
what are some indications to examine the bone marrow?
- persistent unexplained neutropenia
- non regernative anemia
- thrombocytopenia
- excessively high blast count or sus circulating cells
- pancytopenia
define leukemia and the two ways in which it is classified
a malignancy of the hematopoietic cells with significant circulating population
- myeloid vs lymphoid (T or B)
- acute or chronic
which or worse, acute or chronic leukemia, and why?
acute is worse than chronic
acute: immature, poorly differentiated, aggressive clinically
chronic: mature, well differentiated, indolent and slowly progressive clinically
why does a thrombocytosis happen when there’s inflammation?
we dont know! maybe the effect of cytokines on the bone marrow but it is not proved yet
