Ways to Study the Brain Flashcards
1
Q
Simulation
A
- Electric
- Put an electrode in a specific part of the brain, turn on electricity, & will do the specific behavior
2
Q
Accidents
A
-Phineaus Gage (his personality changed & found out frontal lobe holds personality)
3
Q
Imaging
A
-MRI, CAT, PET, fMRI, EEG, EKG
4
Q
Lesion
A
-Intentional removal or destruction of part of the brain
5
Q
MRI
A
(Magnetic Resonance Imaging)
- Uses strong magnetic field * radio waves to create detailed images of organs & tissues
- Non-invasive
6
Q
fMRI
A
(Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging)
- Uses MRI tech. to measure cognitive activity by monitoring blood flow to certain areas of the brain (neutrons active)
- Tests what tissues DO rather than how they look
7
Q
CAT (CT) Scan
A
(Computerized Axial Tomography)
- Combines data from several x-rays to produce a detailed image of structures inside of the body
- Can potentially cause cancer
8
Q
PET Scan
A
(Positron Emission Tomography)
- Imaging reveals how your tissues & organs are functioning
- Uses a radioactive drug (tracer) to show activity (can detect disease before it appears)
- Can have false info
9
Q
EEG
A
(Electroencephalogram)
- Evaluates electrical activity in the brain, tracks & records brain wave patterns
- Small flat metal discs (electrodes) are attached to the scalp w wires & analyze the electrical impulses in brain & send to computer
10
Q
EKG
A
(Electrocardiogram)
-Records electrical signals from your heart
