ways of studying the brain Flashcards
what does fMRIs identify
changes in the levels of oxygen in the brain when a brain area is more active it leads to more oxygen being used so there is an increase in blood flow to area
what does an fMRI prouduce and what does it show
a 3D image called an activation map which shows which part of the brain is active and can be used to identify which pafrts of the brain are being used in specific mental processes
what resolution are fMRI high in
spatial
why are fMRI safer
there non invasive as they dont use radiation unlike pet scans which use radiation
how is an EEG done
electrodes placed on scalp using a skull cap
what do EEG detect
small electrical changes resulting from activity of brain cells
how are EEG graphed
electrical signals graphed over a period of time to show general brain activity
what are EEG used for
detect sleep patterns and states
used in diagnosis of brain tumors and epilipsey
what resolution are EEG high in
temporal
how are ERPs conducted
electrodes placed on scalp using a skull cap
whats the difference between EEG and ERP
ERP show specific brain activity wereas EEG shows general activity
describe ERP
stimilus presented to an indivual mutiple times and their brain activty is measured
all extraneous brain activity from recording is filitered out leaving only responses that link to the stimulus
what resolution are ERP high in
temporal
how is a post mortem conducted
brain of a dead patient exaimed and dissected to look for physical and structural abnnormailities
what is compared in a post mortem
a brain that does show a behaviour or mental process and one that doesnt
