Samatha Meditation
mainly used by Theravada Buddhism. Aim to focus the mind by concentrating on their breathing.
Vipassana Meditation
Helps Buddhists seek the truth and wisdom so they can reach enlightenment.
Metta Bhavana Meditation
Means loving and kindness. Buddhists try to develop calm and inner peace. Also focus on good qualities towards others.
What do Mantras contain?
Usally teachings of Buddha eg, Three Refuges or Five Precepts.
What sort of things are on a shrine? (3)
Flowers - symbolise things don’t stay the same
Incense - represent the idea of purity or speech and behaviour
Candles - lit to represent of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance
What is read to Buddhist people when their dying?
The Tibetan Book of the Dead
What happens once dead in Theravada Buddhism?
They believe re-birth happens straight after the person has passed. A shrine is made and a Monk leads the funeral service, which involves giving a talk and carrying out rites.
what Tibetan Buddhists do when someone has dies?
Often a sky burial. so it can be eaten by vultures. Vultures eat the body as seen the diseased have no sins. Once this happens prayers and lamps are offered every 7 days.
What is Wesak?
also called Buddha day. Held to remember buddhas birth, enlightenment and death. Takes places at a full moon during May or June.
Parinibbana
also called Nibbana Day is a Mahayana Buddhist festival that is celebrated in February. During people remember people that have died and their own death.
