Ways Of Knowing Flashcards
Method of tenacity
The idea that we tend to hold onto our beliefs and ideas even in the face of evidence that contradicts them.
For example, people tend to hold onto racist and sexist discourses even when they are proven to be false
Method of authority
The idea that people tend to accept certain beliefs based on the authority of those who are saying them(mothers, priests, etc).
For example, we tend to accept opinions of experts or leaders even when we don’t fully understand them
Method of intuition
Forming beliefs or making decisions based on our gut feeling. Forming beliefs that suit us rather than logic.
For example, making a decision about a job offer based on how we “feel” about the company or people.
Method of science
Forming beliefs based on evidence and experimentation. Involves making observations, forming hypotheses, and drawing conclusions based on those tested hypotheses.
