Ways Of Investigating The Brain Flashcards
Outline- FMRI
Scan where it detects brain activity by detecting radio waves in the brain while a patient does a task. Detects where oxygen is in the brain.
Outline- EEG
Scan that Detects tiny electrical impulses produced by the brain and measures wave patterns
Outline- ERPs
-measuring brain activity when given an event that will stimulate the brain
Outline- post Mortem
Examining the brain after death
Evaluation- s+w of FMRI
Strength- it’s risk free, no radiation
Weakness- it’s expensive
Evaluation- s+w of EEG
Strength- Improved diagnosis of epilepsy
Weakness- doesn’t pinpoint exact sources of neural activity
Evaluation- s+w of ERPs
Strength- very specific measurements of neural processes
Weakness- lack of standardisation in ERP methodology between different studies
Evaluation- s+w of post Mortoms
Strength- was vital for original foundations of the understanding of the brain. Broca and wernicke relied on it
Weakness- can’t define the causation of these things.
