Biological Rhythums: Circadian Rhythums Flashcards

1
Q

Outline- biological rhythms

A

Distinct changes in body activity that conform to cycle periods. Biological rhythms are influenced by internal body clocks (endogenous pacemakers) aswell as exogenous zietgebers

Outline- sleep wake cycle

A

When we feel drowsy when it’s night time and alert during the day, Demonstrates the effect of day light as its an exogenous zietgeber.

Q

Outline- siffre’s cave study

A
  • he lived in a deep cave for a period of 6 months.
  • deprived of natural sunlight and sound, but access to adequate food and drink
  • his biological rhythms are left to their own accord to control his sleep wake cycle.
Results- his cycle was 25 hours long as oppose to our usual 24 hours, though he continued to fall asleep and wake up on a regular basis

Q

Outline- Jürgen Ashcroft et al (1976)

A
  • group of participants spend 4 weeks in a world war 2 bunker deprived of natural sunlight.
  • all but 1 displayed a sleep wake cycle of 24/25 hours, the anomaly had about 29 hours.
  • suggests that the natural sleep wake cycle is slightly longer than the normal 24 hours.

Q

Evaluation- practical application to shift work

A

Found night workers engaged in shift work experience a period of reduced concentration around 6 in the morning meaning mistakes are more likely.

Q

Evaluation- poor control in studies

A

-they had artificial light which may be an exogenous zietgeber just like sunlight is .
