ways of investigating the brain Flashcards

1
Q

strength:good spatial resolution

A

E:spatial resolution is the smallest feature that a scanner can pick up on. FMRI scanners have a spatial resolution of approx 1-2mm.
E:FMRI spatial resolution is significantly higher that other technologies such as EEG,ERP. therefore psychologists have greater accuracy of the brain when it uses FMRI to detect certain behaviours.

Q

another strength: provides a detailed examination of the brain.

A

E:post-morten examinations can access harder areas such as hippocampus that is not normally able to be scanned using other techniques.
E:therefore, post-mortem examinations provide researchers a tool for forming detailed pictures of the brain.

Q

limitation of FMRI:poor temporal resolution

A

E:the temporal lobe refers to how quickly the scanner can detect changes in the brain activity. they have a temporal resolution of 1-4 seconds.
E:other techniques like EEG have a temporal resolution of around 1-10 millisecond
