localisation of functions Flashcards

1
Q

limitation:its reductionist

A

E:the theory explains complex phenomena such as language purely in terms of the functioning of specific regions of the brain
E:it reduces the complexity of the brain to a series of consistent parts e.g.brocas area.however it has been argued that some complex brain functions like consciousness cannot be easily reduced to the function of individual parts if the brain
L:therefore its more efficient to understand the complex functions if the brain holistically as a single system

Q

strength:brocas research on Louis leborgne

A

E:leborgne suffered from a speech impediment where he was capable of understanding language but whenever he tried to speak he could only say “tan”. after leborgne’s death the neuroscientist Paul Broca discovered a damage to this area of the brain (brocas area)
E:this supports the theory of localization of function as it demonstrates
