Method?
Quasi experiment with women who were diagnosed with breast cancer
Independent design as already had existing social networks
Participants?
133 women under 55 years
Procedure?
Patients were mailed a self administered questionnaire to gather info on their demography and existing social networks, their educational level, who theyre responsible for and perception or support from others.
Given a psychometric test of social network that combined marital status, contact with friends and family and church membership.
Details of diagnosis were abstracted from medical records between 1980-1981 and then their survival and recurrence rates were checked in their marital records in jan 1985.
Results?
Six aspects of social network were significantly linked with survival. These were: marital status, support from friends, contact with friends, total support, social network and employment.
Conclusions?
The more social networks and support, the higher the survival rate of women with breast cancer, although type of cancer was still he main factor in survival.
Aim?
To see how social relationships influence response to breast cancer survival.
