waves pt3 Flashcards
what does the pitch of the sound affect
the frequency of the wavelength
why is does sound wave depicted in an oscilloscope screen look like a transverse wave
it makes it easier to read
compressions are drawn as peak and rarefactions are drawn as troughs
what are sound waves made by
vibrating objects eg vibrating instrument strings
what materials do sounds travel fastest through
solids and more dense materials because there are more particles so the wave can be passed on faster
what does the sound you hear depend upon
the shape of s sound wave
amplitude affects volume and frequency affects pitch
what does the loudness of the sound affect
the amplitude of a sound
what is the electromagnetic spectrum
a set of radiations that have different wavelengths and frequencies but all travel at the same speed in a vacuum
what is the electromagnetic spectrum from shortest wavelength to longest wavelength
gamma ray x Ray ultraviolet infrared microwave radio
what does t mean if the wavelength is shorter
it has higher frequency and higher energy
example of things that use radio waves
Bluetooth
radio
Tv broadcasting
give an example of things that is microwaves
satellite tv
mobile phones
give an example of things that use visible light
photography
optical fibres for broadcasting etc
example of things that use infrared waves
remote control
how are Radio waves created
created by an ax current in an ariel
frequency of the wave is the same as the frequency of the ac current
these are detected by an ariel too. the radio wave energy is absorbed by the electrons in an ariel, creating an ax current with the same frequency as the radio waves
why do radio waves diffract around hills but to signals can’t
waves diffract round hills as wave length is similar to size
however th signals do not diffract round hull as wavelength is much less than hillsize
