Waves introduction Flashcards
What is a wave?
A wave is a method of transferring energy and information between two places.
Describe how a longitudinal wave looks like
In a longitudinal wave, the oscillations of a particle are parallel to the direction of the energy transfer. ( e.g sound wave)
Describe how a transverse wave looks like
In a transverse wave, the oscillations of a particle are perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer. (e.g water wave or a light wave)
What is the wavelength?
The wavelength is the distance between to identical parts of a wave.
What symbol do we give to the wavelength?
lamda λ
What is the amplitude?
The amplitude is the maximum displacement of a wave from it equilibrium position.
What is the frequency?
The frequency is the number
