Thermal transfers Flashcards
What are the three ways energy tries to travel from a high temperature to low temperature?
It is by conduction, convection and radiation.
Explain what is Conduction
Conduction is when the particles in a solid vibrate and hit the particles next to them. Vibrations are bigger the hotter they are. They only happen in solids.
Explain what is Convection
Convection is when particles with a lot of heat energy in a liquid or gas move and take the place of particles with less heat energy.
Explain what is Radiation (thermal)
Radiation is when heat is transferred from an object.
Which surface absorbs and emits the most thermal radiation?
black/matte surfaces
Which surface absorbs and emits the least thermal radiation?
white surfaces
Finish the sentence: Different surfaces and colours absorb and emit ________ amounts of thermal radiation
different
which surface reflects the most thermal energy?
shiny surfaces
