Waves and Energy transfer Flashcards
Define the term wave
A regular pattern of vibration that carries energy from one place to another
The two types of waves
Transverse and Longitudinal
Transverse waves
Vibration of medium is at right angles to wave travel
Longitudinal waves
Vibration of medium is in the same direction as wave travel
Medium
The material that the wave moves through
Examples of longitudinal waves
Sound
Examples of transverse wave
Light, water waves, mechanical waves
Define frequency
The number of full waves that pass a point in one second. Measured in Hertz (Hz)
Define Wavelength
The minimum distance between two peaks on a wave
Define Amplitude
The maximum height of a wave measured from the midpoint
Which travels faster light or sound?
Light travels much faster than sound
We see objects like books, tables etc because
Light rays reflects off them and travel into our eye
The law of reflection states…
The angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection
Define refraction
The bending of a wave when it enters a different substance
Why does refraction happen?
The wave speeds up or slows down when it enters a new substance
