Waves Flashcards
What do waves do
Transfer energy between stores
What are the two ways waves can be described
Oscillations or vibrations
What do sound waves cause air particles to do
Vibrate back and forth
What do ripples cause water particles to do
Vibrate up and down
What is the difference between longitudinal and transverse waves
Direction
What is the direction for longitudinal waves
Vibrations are parallel to the direction of waves travel
What is the direction of transverse waves
Vibrations are at right angles to the direction of the wave travel
What do mechanical waves do
Cause oscillations of particles in a solid, liquid or gas and must have a medium to travel through
What do electromagnetic waves do
Cause oscillations in electrical and magnetic fields
What is the difference between the peak and trough of a wave
Park is the highest point above the rest point and trough is the lowest point from its rest position
What is the amplitude of a wave
The height from the rest point to the wave
What is the equity equation for calculating the time period of the wave
Time period =1/frequency
What is the unit for frequency
Hertz (Hz)
