Waves Flashcards
Wavelength
The distance between the same two points on a wave (i.e. crest to crest).
Frequency
The number of wave cycles that pass a given point per unit of time.
Crest
A crest is the point on a wave with the maximum value of upward displacement within a cycle. A crest is a point on a surface wave where the displacement of the medium is at a maximum. A trough is the opposite of a crest, so the minimum or lowest point in a cycle.
Trough
Trough (geology), a long depression less steep than a trench. Trough (meteorology), an elongated region of low atmospheric pressure. Trough (physics), the lowest point on a wave. Trough level (medicine), the lowest concentration of a medicine is present in the body over time.
Amplitude
The height of a wave measured from midway between the highest and lowest points
Reference line
Definition of reference line. : an arbitrary fixed line (as an x-axis or a polar axis) from which coordinates of a point are computed.
Medium
Substances through which something travels.
