Waves Flashcards
Frequency
The number of wave crests passing a fixed point every second
Period of a wave
The time taken for a full cycle of the wave, usually measured from peak to peak, or trough to trough
Amplitude
The height of a wave crest or trough of a transverse wave from the rest position. For oscillating motion, the amplitude is the maximum distance by an oscillating from it’s equilibrium position
Longitudinal wave
Waves in which the vibrations are parallel to the direction of energy transfer
Transverse wave
A wave where the vibration is perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer
Displacement of a wave
The distance that a certain point in the medium has moved from it’s rest position
Wavelength
Distance covered by a full cycle of the wave, usually measured from peak to peak, or trough to trough
