Waves Flashcards
Wavelength
Distance between peaks
Period
Time it takes for one wavelength to occurs.
= 1/f
Amplitude
Height of a wave
Intensity
Units: W/m2
I is proportional to amplitude square and frequency is squared
= P / 4πr2
Attenuation: idea that as we go out, the waves will interfere with each other and encounter resistance.
Intensity in Decibels
10*log(I/Io)
Wave Velocity
V = wavelength x frequency
- Wave speed is determined by the medium
- Frequency doens’t change from medium to medium
- Wavelength does change when a wave moves from medium to medium
Constructive interference
Amplitudes add to one another, increasing amplitude.
Will occur when two waves are out of phase by 360°
Destructive interference
Amplitudes are subtracted from each other, decreasing amplitude.
Will occur when two waves are out of phase by 180°
Beats
Also known as beat frequency
Occurs when two tones with different frequencies are playing at one time.
i.e. wobble sound heard when tuning instruments
fb = |f1 - f2|
Doppler Effect
Relative change in frequency and pitch due to position of observer.
Frequency
Inversely proportional to wavelength
= 1/t
f = c / wavelength
c: 3.0 x 108 m/s
measured in Hz
Wavelength in open-open tubes
= 2L/n
n= any integer
Wavelength in open-closed tubes
= 4L/n
n = any ODD integer
