Waves Flashcards
Wave
Repeating distance or movement that transfers energy through matter and space. (Medium)
Medium
Substance or material which carries the wave.
Crest
Top of wave
Trough
Bottom of wave
Node
Place where the wave meets the Rest Position.
Rest Position
Line through a wave.
Amplitude
Distance from resting position.
Wavelength
The distance from the top of one crest to the top of the next crest. OR node to every other node.
Transverse Wave
Motion of the medium is at right angles to the direction or travel (Opposite of each other)
EX: Ocean Waves
Longitudinal aka Compression wave
Particles move along the direction of the wave.
EX: Sound
Compression
Dense region of compression wave.
Rarefication
Less dense region of compression wave.
Frequency
of wavelengths that pass a certain point in a certain amount of time
Sound
Energy carried by vibration of matter
Intensity
Amount of energy that flows through a certain area in a specific amount of time
