Waves Flashcards
What two factors influence height of wind driven waves
Wind speed and wind duration. When these two increase it makes wind height and duration increase
What are some of the ways that waves are created?
Storm winds, global winds, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, and the moons gravity
What is Fetch?
Distance over water that the wind blows, acts as a limiting factor
What is wave depth?
Point at which wave motion ends below surface. Half the wavelength the longer the wave the deeper it is.
How is wavelength determined?
In part by the force responsible for creating the wave. The more energy the longer the wave
T/F tsunami are much stronger than wind generated waves?
True
What are rogue waves?
Extremely long waves resulting from wave interaction
What are seiches?
Water level increasing and decreasing in a confined space when disturbed by a storm
What causes tsunami?
Earthquakes and landslides
What are internal waves?
Large waves that form beneath the oceans surface
For seiches, what is a set up? What is a set down?
Setup where water is high
Set down where water is low
What are tsunami?
Long wavelength waves created by rapid displacement of water
Where do most tsunami occur?
Pacific Ocean
What is the comparison between wave height and wavelength for tsunami?
Wave height small 3 to 5 feet
Wavelength very long 60 to 120 feet
What is one of the few things that an disturb deep ocean?
Tsunami
