Waves Flashcards
What is reflection off a smooth surface?
Specular reflection
What are the two types of error?
Random and systematic
Why does refraction not occur when the angle of incidence is on the normal?
All points on a wavefront enter the glass at the same time
why does refraction happen at the boundary between two materials? explain in terms of wave fronts
- Part of wavefront closest to boundary enters glass before other parts
- Speed of the wave slows down in glass
- So front closer to boundary is slower and other front turns the whole wave
What are the use of radio waves and why?
Used in radios and tv as they have a long wavelength so they travel far
What are the use of microwaves and why?
Used to microwave food and sattelite communication as they can penetrate ionosphere
Use of infrared and why?
Infrared cameras and cooking as they transfer thermal energy
Use of visible light?
Its for our sight and fibre optic cables
Use of Ultra violet light?
Tanning and anti bacterial and also vitamin d
Use of X-ray and why?
Medical and can penetrate skin and not penetrate bones
Use of gamma?
Medical
What is it called when an image is formed on the same side of the object and where does it occur?
Called virtual and appears in concave lens and convex lens
