Forces Flashcards
Why is using a longer lever to do something easier?
There is a longer perpendicular distance from the pivot to the force is greater so less force is required
What is a moment of a force?
Perpendicular distance from the pivot to the line of action of the force x the force itself
What is weight and how do you calculate it?
How much force is exerted compared to your mass
Weight= mass x gravitational field strength
Why do crumple zones reduce damage to passengers in a collision?
- Crumple zones increase the time taken to stop
- So rate of change of momentum decreases
- reducing the force on the passenger
What is inertia?
How difficult it is to change the velocity of an objec
What is a contact force?
A force that requires two objects to touch
What is a non-contact force?
A force that only happens when objects are not touching
what is the equation for weight?
Mass x Gravitational field strength = Weight
What is a resultant force?
The one force that equals all of the forces acting on the object
When is an object in equilibrium?
When the two forces acting on an object are equal
How do you calculate spring constant or extension?
Force = Spring constant x Extension
What is the equation for elastic potential energy?
