Waves Flashcards
What is the amplitude of a wave measured in?
Metres (m)
What is the amplitude of a wave??
It is half of the vertical distance between a trough and a crest.
How do you calculate the period of a wave?
T= 1/F 1
T F
Frequency
1
Period
What is the wavelength of a wave?
The wavelength is the horizontal distance between two adjacent troughs or crests or any two corresponding points on the wave.
What is the frequency and how is it measured?
The frequency is the number of waves that pass a point in 1s and is measured in hertz (Hz)
What are the five properties of a wave?
The Frequency The Wavelength The Amplitude The Period The Wave Speed
A pupil counts 20 waves passing a point in 4 seconds. Calculate
a) the frequency
b) the period
a) no of waves / time
= 20/4
= 5Hz
b) 1/frequency
= 1/5
= 0.2s
What equipment can you use to measure the speed of sound?
- two microphones
- a fast timer
- metre stick
What is the formula for calculating the speed of sound?
Speed = Distance / Time
S D T
What are transverse waves?
In transverse waves the particles of the medium vibrate at right angles to the direction that the energy travels. Transverse means across.
What are longitudinal waves ?
It is a wave where energy travels along in the same direction as the particles vibrate. This type of wave is known as a longitudes wave. ( the energy travels along the direction of the vibration of the particles).
What is wave speed?
Is a measure of how quickly the wave travels from its source.
What is the relationship between frequency and period?
F = 1/T
What is the speed of sound in air?
340m/s
What is the speed of a water wave that has a frequency of 3Hz and a wavelength of 5m?
V=fxλ
V= 3x5
V= 15 m/s
