Waves Flashcards
What is a longitudinal wave?
Vibrations are along the same direction as the wave transfers energy
What is a transverse wave?
The vibrations are at 90 degrees to the direction energy is transferred by the wave
What is the definition of wavelength?
Distance from one peak to the next
What is the definition of frequency?
How many complete waves there are per second passing a second point
What is the definition of amplitude?
Height of the wave from rest to crest
What is the definition of speed?
How fast the wave goes
What is the definition of period?
Time it takes in seconds for one complete wave to pass point
What do waves transfer?
Energy and information without transferring matter
What is the formula for wave speed?
Frequency * wavelength
What is the formula for frequency?
1/ time period
What are the 7 parts of the EM spectrum?
1) Radio waves
2) Micro-waves
3) Infrared
4) Visible light
5) Ultra-violet
6) X-rays
7) Gamma rays
What happens to wavelength and frequency as you go down the EM spectrum?
Frequency increases
Wavelength decreases
What can microwaves do to the human body?
Heat the body tissue
What can infrared ways do to the body?
Skin burns
What can ultraviolet rays do to the body?
Damage to surface cells and blindness
