Magnetism and Electromagnetism Flashcards
What do magnets do?
Attract and repel other magnetic materials
What are the properties of a hard magnet?
A hard magnet will keep its magnetism permanently
What are the properties of a soft magnet?
It loses its induced magnetism quickly
How do you use magnets to produce a magnetic field?
Placing the north and south poles of two permanent bar magnets near each other creates a uniform field between the two magnets
What does an electric current in a conductor produce?
A magnetic field around it
How do you make an electromagnet?
Wrapping a wire around an iron nail and running current through the wire
How do you increase voltage in an induced magnet?
1) Increase the strength of the magnet
2) Increase the number of turns on the coil
3) Increases the speed of movement
What does a transformer do?
Changes the size of an alternating voltage by having different number of turns on the input and output sides
What do step-up transformers do?
Increase the voltage as they have more turns on the secondary col than the primary coil
What do step-down transformers do?
Decrease the voltage as they have more turns on the primary coil than the secondary coil
Input voltage/ output voltage equals
number of turns on primary coil/ number of turns on secondary coil
