Waves Flashcards
What do waves carry?
Energy from one place to another and also information.
What examples of longitudinal waves?
Soundwaves travelling through air.
What are examples of transverse waves?
The ripples on a Water surface, electromagnetic waves.
What do Longitudinal waves have ?
Rarefractions
Compressions
What is Amplitude?
The maximum displacement of a point on a wave away from it’s undisturbed position.
What is the Wavelength ?
It is the distance from one point on a wave to the equivalent point on the adjacent wave.
What is the frequency of a Wave?
The number of waves passing a point each second.
What is Wave speed?
The speed at which energy is transferred or the wave moves through the medium.
What is wavelength measured in?
Meters
What is Frequency measured in ?
Hertz
What is the period measured in?
Seconds
What is Wave speed measured in?
Meters per seconds
What are Electromagnetic Waves?
They are transverse waves which transfer energy from the source of the waves to an absorber.
How are the Electromagnetic Waves grouped?
From Long Wavelength to Short Wavelength
From Low frequency to Short Frequency.
What is the Analogy for Electromagnetic Waves?
Red
Meat
Is
Unhealthy
eXcept
Giraffe
Can humans detect Electromagnetic Waves easily?
No, our eyes only detect visible light and so only detect a limited range of waves.
How can waves be transfered from location to location?
Different substances may absorb, transmit, refract or reflect electromagnetic waves that vary with wavelength.
What does refraction relate to?
The difference in velocity of the waves in different substances (look at wave front diagrams )
How can Radio Waves be produced ?
They are produced by oscillations in electrical circuits.
What happens when Radio Waves are absorbed?
They may create an alternating current with the same frequency as the the radio wave itself, so radio waves can themselves induce oscillations in an electrical circuit.
How do changes in nuclei and and atoms relate to electromagnetic waves?
They can result in electromagnetic waves being generated or absorbed over a wide frequency range
Which 3 waves can have a hazardous effect on human body tissue ?
Ultraviolet Light
Gamma rays
X-rays
What does the damage of human body tissue rely on?
The radiation
Size of the radiation dose (needs to be measured and regulated)
What harmful about Ultraviolet light?
It can cause skin to age prematurely and increase the risk of skin cancer.
