Forces Flashcards
What do Scalar quantities have ?
Magnitude only.
What do Vector quantities have?
Magnitude (size ) and direction
What can a Vector quantity be represented by ?
An arrow
The length represents magnitude.
The direction represents the direction of the force
What are contact forces ?
When 2 or more forces are physically touching.
Examples of a contact force ?
Friction, Air resistance, Tension
What are non-contact forces
When 2 forces exert a force onto eachother but are physically seperated.
What is weight ?
The force acting on a object due to gravity?
Examples of a Non-contact force ?
Gravitational force, Electrostatic force and Magnetic force.
What affects weight?
The gravitational field strength of where the object is?
What is weight measured in?
Newtons
What is mass measured in?
Kilograms
What is gravitational field strength measured in ?
Newtons/ kilogram
What can weight be measured using?
A calibrated spring-balance.
What is a Resultant Force?
When a number of forces are replaced by a single force, which has the same effect as the original forces put together
Which diagrams show Resultant forces, horizontally and vertically ?
Free Body Diagrams
What is Work Done?
When a force causes an object to move through a distance or causes a displacement in the object.
What is force measured in?
Newtons
What is distance (S) measured in?
Metres
What is extension directly proportional to ?
Force applied
What is the limit of Proportionality?
When the extension is no longer proportional to the force applied.
What is the spring constant measured in?
newtons per meter.
What does it mean when a object is Elastically deformed?
When a object changes shape due to a force applied but returns to normal once it’s removed
What does it mean when a object is Inelastically deformed ?
When a object chnage shape due to a force applied but does not return to normal once it’s removed.
What is distance ?
It is how far an object has moved (scalar quantity)
