waves Flashcards
what is a londitudinal wave
Direction of oscillation is PARALLEL to the direction of energy transfer (e.s. sound. seismic P waves). Consists of COMPRESSIONS & RAREFACTIONS.
what does wavelength/time period/frequency mean
WAVELENGTH (m) - length of one complete wave
Time period (s) - the time taken for one wave to pass
FREQUENCY (Hz) - the number Of waves pass every second
what is a transverse wave
TRANSVERSE WAVES: the direction of oscillation iS PERPENDICULAR to the direction of energy transfer (e.g. waves. seismic S waves. light. EM waves).
what are the wave equations
wavespeed (m/s) frequency (Hz) x wavelength (m)
name from longest to shortest wave the order of the em spectrum and give examples
RADIO WAVES Phones. TV, WIFI
MICRO WAVES Cooking (absorbed by water)
INFRA-RED Cooking (absorbed by surface)
VISIBLE LIGHT vision
ULTRA VIOLET Tanning can cause skin cancer
X-RAYS Medical scans. also dangerous
GAMMA RAYS Sterilisins, medical treatments. also dangerous
