Waves Flashcards
Wavelength
The distance between identical points (upside down y)
Frequency
Number of waves that pass a fixed point in unit of time
Amplitude
The maximum extent of a vibration
Longitudinal wave
A wave that moves in the same direction as the direction in which the particles are vibrating
Eg. Ultrasound,sound waves
Transversal waves
A we in which the vibrating element moves in a direction perpendicular (crossing) to the direction of advance of the waves eg. Light waves ,electromagnetic waves
Wave speed
Frequency x wavelength
V= f x y
Wave speed
Distance / time
V= x / t
How to measure the velocity of sound in air and ripples on water surface
Have a tank of water, and get a wooden stick that touches.
By adding a lamp and motor, it adds waves that can be seen.
Count the number of waves that pass a point in 10 seconds and then divide by 10 to record frequency .
Calculate speed of waves by frequency x wavelength
Refraction
The bending of light as it passes from one transparent substance into another
Absorbtion / absorb
A substance captured and transform energy
Substances that absorb: Cotten,
Transmit
what the most dangerous electromagnetic wave
Gamma rays
what the least dangerous electromagnetic wave
Radio waves
