Waves Flashcards
Two types of waves
Transverse and longitudinal
What is an example of a transverse wave in an experiment
The ripples on a water surface
What do longitudinal waves show areas of
Compressions and rarefactions
What are sound waves which travel through air
Longitudinal
What is the amplitude of a wave
The maximum displacement of a point on a wave away form its undisturbed position
What is the wavelength of a wave
The distance from on one way to the equivalent point on the adjacent wave
What is the frequency of a wave?
The number of waves passing a point each second
What is period measured in
Second (s)
What is period written as
T
How is frequency written
f
What is frequency measured in
hertz (Hz)
What is the wave speed
Is the speed at which the energy is transferred or the wave moves through the medium
What is the wave speed equation
Wave speed = frequency x wavelength
What is the wave speed equation in letters
[v=f(upside down y)]
How is wave speed written as
v
What is wave speed measured in?
Metres per second (m/s)
How is wave length written as
(Upside down y)
What is waves speed measured in ?
Meters per sec (m/s)
What are Electromagnetic waves
Transverse waves
What do electro magnetic waves do
They transfer energy from the source of a wave to an absorber
What do electromagnetic waves form?
A continuous spectrum and all types of electromagnetic waves travel at the same velocity through a vacuum (space)or air
In the Electromagnetic spectrum, what is the start to the end? In wavelength
Long to short
In the Electromagnetic spectrum, what is the start to the end? In frequency
Low to high
Name the waves in the electromagnetic spectrum?
Radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, x-rays,gamma rays
