Waves Flashcards
Define wave
Disturbance/ Vibration
Define amplitude
Distance from the crest of the wave to the equilibrium position
Distance from the trough of the wave to the equilibrium position
Define crest
Highest point in a wave
Define trough
Lowest point in a wave
Define in phase
Two particles need to be on the exact position on the wave on the next wave
Define wavelength
The distance between two particles that are in phase with each other
What are the 2 types of waves?
Transverse and Longitudinal
Define transverse wave
Disturbance 90 degrees to direction of wave
Define longitudinal wave
Disturbance 0 or 180 degrees to the direction of the wave
Define frequency
Number of waves that pass a point in 1 second
Define period
Time taken for one complete wave to pass a point
Define compression
When a longitudinal wave’s waves become closer together
Define rarefraction
When a longitudinal wave’s waves become further apart
What is the formula for the velocity of a wave?
Velocity = frequency x wavelength
V = f x lambda
Complete: Waves travel in _________ _______
Straight lines
