Electromagnetism Flashcards
Describe electromagnetic induction
A conductor moving across a magnetic field can induce an EMF in the conduction
How does one increase the effect of electromagnetic conduction?
Moving the wire faster
Using a strong magnet
Increasing the length of wire in the magnetic field
What are the 3 factors of electromagnetism?
Motion
Current
Magnetic field
Describe the right hand ampere rule.
The curl of the fingers indicates the direction of the magnetic field.
The thumb represents the current direction.
Describe the right hand solenoid rule.
The curl of fingers follow the current.
Thumb indicates direction of the magnetic field
Describe Faraday’s right hand generator rule.
Middle finger represents current
Index finger represents magnetic field (N to S)
Thumb represents the motion
Describe Lenz’s law.
An induced current always flows in a direction such that it opposes the change which produced it.
Describe a slip ring commutator.
Produces A.C current in a generator
Describe a split ring commutator.
Produces D.C current in a generator
What does a motor do?
Converts electrical energy into kinetic energy
Describe Flemming’s left hand motor rule.
Thumb represents motion
Index finger represents magnetic field
Middle finger represents current
