Waves Flashcards
What are transverse waves?
When the displacement is at right angles to the direction of the wave
What are longitudinal waves?
When the displacement is parallel to the direction of the wave
Example of transverse waves?
Microwaves
Example of longitudinal waves?
Sound waves
What do travelling waves transfer?
Energy without matter being transferred too
What do the particles of the waves do?
Vibrate
What is the amplitude of a wave?
The maximum height of a peak e.g. those heat monitors and like that line goes really high if u get what I mean :)
How do u know what 1 wavelength looks like?
When it has a peak and a trough??? (trough is same as a peak but the one thats down
What is frequency?
The number of wavelengths passing a point each second
What is frequency measured in?
Hertz (Hz)
1 Hz = 1 wave per second
10 Hz = 10 waves “
1 kHz = 1000 Hz = 1000 waves “
1 MHz = 1 million Hz = 1000000 waves “
A 20 kHz wave makes how many vibrations each second?
20k vibrations (why did I add this)
What are wave speeds?
The distance a wave travels each second
Water waves and something to do with the depths (I don’t have anything for this in my page, yikes)
^^^ yikes
Describe the orbit of a geostationary satellite.
Satellite orbits the earth in 24 hrs in the same direction as the earth spins. Due to earth also taking 24 hrs to spin, from our pov it appears to be in the same spot at all times.
Describing the meaning of “Geostationary Satellite”
Same orbital time as the spin of the earth
What is geostationary?
- Takes 24 hrs to orbit
- Above the equator
- Appears to be in the same place at all times
What is geosynchronous?
- Takes 24 hrs to orbit
- Isn’t above the equator
- Moves in the sky?
Use of geostationary satellites?
Relay information constantly between any two points on the Earth’s surface
Advantages of geostationary satellites?
- High data rates - transmit information at the speed of light
- Can be in constant communication
- No wires are needed for these microwaves
Disadvantages of geostationary satellites?
- Water in atmosphere can absorb the microwaves and disrupt communication (similar to problematic TV signals when there is heavy rain)
- Due to the high altitude of the satellite, it’s a long distance for the signal to travel along causing a delay in receiving the communication signal
What is the frequency of the reflected wave the same as?
The incident wave
What is the wavelength of the reflected wave the same as?
The incident wave
Whats the only change in the reflected wave?
The direction
What is the speed of the waves in deep water?
Fast
What is the speed of the waves in shallow water?
Slow
When the wave travels from deep water to shallow water….?
The wave length and speed decreases
When the wave travels from shallow water to deep water…?
The wave length and speed increases
What happens when the water waves cross the boundary at an angle between deep and shallow water?
Refraction occurs
What 2 things happen during refraction?
- Wave changes speed
2. Waves change direction
