Waves Flashcards
What are waves
repeated vibrations that transfer energy
transverse waves
waves where the oscillations are perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer
key points of transverse waves
Transverse waves can move in a liquid or solid
electromagnetic waves can move in a vacuum
The energy transfer is in the same direction as the wave motion
examples of transverse waves:
ripples on the surface of water
vibrations in a guitar string
s-waves
electromagnetic waves
longitudinal waves
waves where the point along its length vibrate parallel to the direction of energy transfer
key points of longitudinal waves
they require a medium
energy transfer is in the same direction as the wave motion
can move in solids, liquids and gases
can not move in a vacuum
examples of longitudinal waves:
Sound waves
P-waves
Pressure waves caused by repeated movements in a liquid or gas
