Wave Vocab Flashcards
Medium
Medium wave (MW) is the part of the medium frequency (MF) radio band used mainly for AM radio broadcasting. For Europe the MW band ranges
Mechanical wave
A mechanical wave is a wave that propagates as an oscillation of matter, and therefore transfers energy through a medium. While waves can move over long distances, the movement of the medium of transmission—the material—is limited.
Transverse
A transverse wave is a moving wave that consists of oscillations occurring perpendicular (or right angled) to the direction of energy transfer.
Crest
crest is the point on a wave with the maximum value or upward displacement within a cycle. A crest is a point on the wave where the displacement of the medium is at a maximum.
Though
trough is an elongated region of relatively low atmospheric pressure, often associated with fronts.[1]
Compression
Compression is a reduction in the number of bits needed to represent data.
Rarefaction
diminution in the density of something, especially air or a gas.
Wavelength
the distance between successive crests of a wave, especially points in a sound wave or electromagnetic wave.
Frequency
Frequency is the number of occurrences of a repeating event per unit time. It is also referred to as temporal frequency, which emphasizes the contrast to spatial frequency and angular frequency.
Period amplified
This function has a period of 2π because the sine wave repeats every 2π units.
Refraction
Refraction is the change in direction of propagation of a wave due to a change in its transmission medium. The phenomenon is explained by the conservation of energy and conservation of momentum. Due to change of medium, the phase velocity of the wave is changed but its frequency remains constant.
Diffraction
Diffraction refers to various phenomena which occur when a wave
