Wave Types Flashcards
Direction of Propagation
Any way in which waves travel
Propagation of longitudinal waves
Each particle vibrate left and right (back and fourth)
These vibrations are parallel to the wave direction
Propagation of transverse waves
The particles vibrate up and down
These vibrations are at right angles to the wave direction
Two types of transverse waves
Water Waves
Electromagnetic Waves
Example of longitudinal wave
Sound waves
What is compression
They are sections that are pushed together
What is a rarefaction
These are sections that are stretched out
Why is sound a longitudinal wave
Sound waves in any medium vibrate in a parallel direction that sound wave moves
Seismic Waves
Vibrations in the rocks caused by earthquakes or explosions.
There are transverse and longitudinal seismic waves
Detectors of transverse waves
Must be aligned at right-angle to direction of propagation
e.g tv and radio antennas
How do microphones work
detect pressure variations caused by compression and rarefactions of air in a soundwave
