Carry light signals long distances without losing any light through their sides

angle of incidence that provides an angle of refraction of 90degress

A
Angle of reflection also increases and is always larger; some light is always reflected internally

Optical fibres vs Copper wires
A
Optical better than copper:
- Lower losses, so travel further before needing amplification
- Secure, cannot be tapped
- Higher frequencies, so provide greater bandwidth
BUT optical cost more and need specialist installation

Measures how much data can be sent over a specific connection in a given amount of time
