wave properties and behavior Flashcards
what are the two main catigories of waves
EM and mechanical
there are two types of mechanical waves what are they? what is the difference about how they move
longitudinal- sound, travles the smae direction as the force that created it
transverse- travels perpendicular to the force that creats it
Name, difine, and be able to sketch the three main properties of all waves
- amplitude- the length between the resting point and the crest
- frequency- the amount of times waves pass through a given point in a certain amount of time
- wave length- the length from crest to crest
what happens to the other properties of a wave when frequency deacreses
wave length decreases
with a compression wave, what represents the amplitude
the area between refrations
name define and be able to scetch the main behaviors of waves
- reflection- the bouncing back of a wave after hitting a barrier
- diffraction- the spreading out of a wave after passing though an oppening
- refraction- the bending of a wave when it travels from one type of matter to the next
explain the difference between constructive and destructive interference, and be able to scetch them
constructive is when two waves meet crest to crest and make a bigger wave. destructive is when two waves meet crest to trough and they cancel eachother out for a short period of time
what are the 7 different types of EM waves
radio, micro, infared, visible, ultraviolet, x-rays, gamma
what changes as you move from left to right across the EM spectrum
wavelength goes down, frequency goes up
explain what a radio and a gamma ray have in common and what makes them different. include the words EM wave, frequency, wavelength, speed, and energy
they are both EM waves. they are both light so they travle at the same speed. Gamma has a shorter wavelength, higher frequency, and more energy then x-rays and vis-versa
