Wave Properties Flashcards
Wave Def:
Waves are travelling disturbances that transport energy from one location to the other without transporting matter.
What are the types of waves?
Electromagnetic & Mechanical Waves.
Electromagnetic Waves Def?
Are waves that travel through a vacuum (empty space).
Mechanical Waves Def?
Are waves that require a medium to travel through. They can travel very large distances, but the individual particles dont travel very far from their original position.
Types of Mechanical Waves:
Transverse & Longitudinal Waves.
Define Transverse Waves:
Is a type of mechanical wave in-which individual particles in the medium vibrate perpendicular to the direction of the movement of wave.
E.x. Water
Define Longitudinal Waves:
Is a type of mechanical wave in-which particles vibrate parallel to the direction of the wave movement. The transfer of energy in this wave creates areas of low pressure which is rarefaction, and areas of high pressure called compressions.
e.x. sound waves
Amplitude (A):
Maximum displacement of particles in matter from their resting position. Measured in Meters.
Wavelength:
Distance between the formation of two identical waveforms. (Between two peaks). Measured in Meters.
Frequency (ƒ):
Measure of the rate of which waves occur per second. Measured in Hertz (Hz)
Period (T):
Amount of time required for a wavelength to pass a specific point. Measured in seconds.
