Nuclear Fission Flashcards
What is nuclear fission?
(Random Process) Nuclear fission occurs when an atomic nucleus splits into two or more smaller nuclei when bombarded with particles such as a neutron.
Why is neutron most compatible for fission?
This is because a neutron has a neutral charge, so it will experience none/less repulsion from atomic nuclei.
Fissile Meaning?
Fissile refers to nuclei that have the ability to undergo fission.
Define the mass-energy balance.
E=mc^2 states that the mass of a particle is directly proportional to its energy. Therefore, if a reaction absorbs or emits energy, then a change in mass must accompany the reaction.
Mass-energy balance equation:
E = mc^2
E = Energy in joules (J)
m = Mass in Kg (Kg)
c = Speed of light (3 x 10^8) m s^-1
Define nuclear binding energy:
Nuclear binding energy refers to-energy that is required to separate an atomic nucleus into its constituent nucleons.
Define mass defect:
Mass defect refers to the difference in mass in nuclei.
