Wave Particle Duality Flashcards
What is the photoelectric effect?
The emission of an electron from the surface of a metal in response to light of high frequency being shone on the surface
What two conditions are needed for photo emission?
Negatively charged plate
High frequency light
What is ejected from the plate?
Photo electrons
How must the light be considered for photoemission?
It must be considered as a particle-a photon
What is wave-particle duality?
The view that light can act as both a wave and a particle
What is threshold frequency?
The minimum frequency of em radiation required in order to eject electrons from a particular metal
What is the work function of a metal?
The amount of energy required to ionised an electron
What happens if there is more energy supplied than the work function of the metal?
Excess energy is transferred into kinetic energy or the electron
What is irradiance?
Irradiance is the power per unit area
