Wave 4: Systemic therapy Flashcards
Systemic therapy overview
- post modern
- family therapy and systems therapy
the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
people are best understood by assessing the interactions within the family they live with.
change is more possible by putting the focus on interactions instead of the context.
Where do problems come from?
systemic therapy
symptoms of how the system functions, not the individual.
serve a function/purpose for family.
unintentionally maintained by family processes due to families inability to function passed down.
circular vs linear causality
Linear vs circular causality
linear:
A causes B
- A influences B, but B does not influence A
circular:
circle, dynamic is ongoing.
A influences B, and B influences A
How does systemic therapy approach change?
- creates insight by drawing awareness to interactive patters over generations.
- facilitates de triangulation
(one member maintains a position despite conflict from family members) - reframes problems
- coaching to change emotional reactivity
Systemic therapy techniques
- draw attention to roles and communication styles.
- circular questions
- family sculpting
- genograms
