Waterfalls & River Landforms Flashcards
Define hard rock
This rock is resistant so over a time a ledge develops
Define a waterfall
Where the water tumbles over the ledge
Define soft rock
This is easier to erode
Define a gorge
The waterfall cuts its way up the valley
Define fallen rocks
When the ledge collapses it falls into the plunge pool
Define plunge pool
Here the debris speeds up erosion
Describe the first step as to how a waterfall is formed
The river flows along the hard and soft rock.
Describe the second step as to how a waterfall is formed
The soft rock erodes quicker, leaving a small dent between the two rock lines.
Describe the third step as to how a waterfall is formed
The waterfall begins to undercut the ledge, creating a plunge pool and a gorge.
Describe the fourth step as to how a waterfall is formed
The hard rock collapses. The waterfall recedes upstream.
Define a meander
When the river curves/takes a bendy path like a snake
Define an oxbow lake
A curved lake, originally a meander which has been cut off from the main river.
Define an interlocking spur
A valley which takes alternate extensions, creating a wiggly river
Define a v-shaped valley
Formed by erosion from a river or stream over time.
