Waterfalls Flashcards
What is the first step of waterfall?
Waterfalls are formed when a river flows over a layer of harder rock followed by a layer of softer rocks.
What is the second step of a waterfall?
The soft rocks erodes (vertical erosion) more quickly forming a step in the river bend.
What is the third step of a waterfall?
The force of the water undercuts the hard rock and creates a plunge pool.
What is the fourth step of a waterfall?
The hard rock is left overhanging and as it isn’t supported, it eventually collaps.
What is the fifth step of a waterfall?
The fallen rock crash into the plunge pool and they swirl around causing more erosion.
What is the sixth step of a waterfall?
Over time, this process repeats and the waterfall moves upstream.
