Waterbury Wines Flashcards

Q

Chateau Massereau Graves

A

13%. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Red Stem Merlot, Petit Verdot.

Chateau Masserau was built in barsac in the 16th century. Barsac is actually known for its sweet white wines, so this wine is exceptional for the area. Two brothers manage the estate, and most of the work is done by hand or by horses, and the wine is made naturally. The result are wines that taste like their much more expensive traditional Bordeaux counterparts. This graves was vinified in cement vats and then aged in oak. For being natural, it’s still going to be a pretty benchmark Bordeaux. Notes of leather, black berry, black currant.

Q

Martha Stoumen Carignan, 2021

A

12.5%. Carignan.

Carignan is a medium-bodied wine, it mostly grows in southern France, but also grows in Spain and California. It’s used in blends with Grenache and Syrah, and has notes of dried cranberry, raspberry, licorice, baking spices, and cured meat. I’d generally drink carignan with richer poultry dishes, red meat, eggplant, maybe Israeli food. This wine will be slightly tannic, as a mixture of punchdowns and pumpovers were used to reintegrate the cap of solids that formed in the wine back into the liquid, which extracts tannins. This was done gently, though, so this wine will not be very tannic. This wine is slightly acidic, and brings notes of fruit and baking spices, specifically blackberry and cinnamon.

Les Traboules Coteaux du Lyonnais 2020

A

12.5%. Gamay.

This wine is from the Coteaux due Lyonnais region, which is right between the Beaujolais region and Lyon. Gamay grapes, and a very similar style to Beaujolais, so berries and spice are prominent notes here.

La Distesa Meticcio

A

12.5%. Verdicchio, Trebbiano, Sangiovese, Montepulciano.

A blend of red and white grapes, will drink differently than a rose, and can probably best be characterized as a really light, fruity red with notes of berries and tropical tones. The grapes are picked on the same day, and even though they will be at different ripenesses, a balance is found in the blend. The winemaker said that he wanted to, with this bottle, express terroir while using not just one varietal at a time. Near the coast, lots of sunshine, and fantastically drinkable wines.

Q

Pasaeli

A

13%. Calkarasi.

Pasaeli is made with 100% Calkarasi grapes, which are red grapes indigenous to Western Turkey. These grapes are definitely sweeter, but with notes of strawberries and raspberries. This wine is still on the dry side, however. Grown in the mediterranean climate of the Denizli Province, hot and dry summers result in very ripe grapes and a pretty juicy wine. This wine is also fermented in stainless steel tanks, and aged Sur lie to give complexity.

Q

Domaine La Suffrene Bandol

A

13.5%. Mourvèdre, Cinsault, Grenache, Carignan.

Bandol is a key appellation in far southeastern France, which makes red, white and rose wines in vineyards around the mediterranean coastal town of Bandol. The roses of Bandol are made from a blend of mouvedre, Grenache, and cinsault, and are known for their spicy, earthy character and are known as some of France’s best roses. This particular rose is mostly mouvedre, which is a full bodied grape. This means that this wine will have some structure and spice.

Burja Malvazija

A

14%. Malvazija.

The wine itself has a light skin-contact, with incredible depth, a core of stone fruit, mirabelle, apple, citrus, honey, with hints of smoke and savoury notes with fine finish and marked minerality. In the mouth it is fresh balanced with a good presistance. A very drinkable wine indeed.

There’s only 7 days of skin contact, so not much here, and it is unfined and unfiltered.
Burja is named after the cold, north-easterly wind that is incredibly strong and blows through the vineyards. This is a family owned winery in the Vipava Valley of Slovenia, which is contiguous with Friuli in Italy, a region known for its white wines

His family have lived in the fertile Vipava Valley since the late 15th century. This region of Slovenia is contiguous with Friuli in Italy, and is similarly known for its white wines, particularly from local varieties.
