Water Regulations Flashcards
By which two directives are emission limits for the release of pollutants to water set?
- Industrial Emissions Directive (IED)
- Water Framework Directive (WFD)
These frameworks should be considered in conjunction.
Which framework drives authorisations and licenses by the Environmental Quality standards?
WFD
Which framework drives permits by the Environmental Quality standards?
IED
What else do WFD and IED cover other than pollutants?
Abstraction and impoundment of water.
What is the requirement of the discharge?
It does not worsen the local conditions of water to which discharge is taking place
Why is the regulations regarding water complex?
The Environmental Quality Standards Directive (EQSD) is an amendment of WFD so if you follow IED then you are still bound by the WFD.
These standards are comprehensive and to what do these include?
Ecological communities (i.e. living species) and aesthetic appearance
What are the water quality classes for tivers?
High –> Good –> Moderate –> Poor –> Bad
Again why is the classification of water quality class?
Could be high in some respects and then moderate in others.
Which targets by SEPA must you consider in discharging effluent to a body of water?
Both the present and future targets.
What is the first stage in designing a plant which is producing a pollutant in water?
Curtailing the water and effluent size. Use minimal volumes of water and then also try to recycle water.
What other stages in discharging effluent?
- Knowing the pollutant. “Prescribed” substances in IED?
- Is there a specific BAT for process?
- Is it an organic compound? If so, it will likely be reducible in which case does it have a BOD/ COD, have to estimate?
- Where is pollutant being discharged?
- Design process being mindful of your abstraction. Avoid/ re-use/ reduce/ recover the pollutant.
