Water Regulation Flashcards
What are the 3 elements that dictate water potential?
Osmotic potential, pressure potential, and matric potential.
How does water typically move?
Water moves from a system of higher water potential to lower water potential, following the energy gradient.
What are the conditions necessary for a plant to absorb water?
The plant must have a low water potential gradient, because water moving between soil and plants flows DOWN a water potential gradient.
Dictate the flow of water:
Soil > roots > stem > leaves
Do deeper or shallower roots help plants in dry environments?
DEEPER because the roots are able to abstract water from deep within the soil profile
Examples of waterproof outer coverings for terrestrial organisms:
Concentrated urine/feces, drought deciduous leaves, periodic dormancy, few stomata, and thick leaves
