Water Production Flashcards
What are the uses of fresh water
Drinking
Washing
Cooking
Cleaning
What services are provided by fresh water systems
Laundry Galley Showers and sinks Water heaters Medical use Bridge window washers Fresh water hose reals Machinery cooling
What is osmosis
The transfer of pure water through a semi-permeable membrane into salt water
What is reverse osmosis
The transfer of water from salt water through a semi-permeable membrane into pure water
What does TDS stand for
Total dissolved solids
What is the measure of water purity
TDS of sea water is approximately 34,000ppm
TDS of water desalination is between 250 and 300ppm
Approximately 80% of the supplied sea water is ejected
The desalinated water is called permeate and is sometimes referred to as Made Water
Waste water after desalination is called Concentrate
What does the first filtration stage of the RO plant do
Comprises of a bag filter that filters down to 60 microns
What does the second filtration stage of the RO plant do
Comprises a bank of two cartridge filters down to 10 microns
What does the RO plant have
A high pressure, 3 piston positive displacement pump
This provides pressure up to 65 bar
What does the anti-scalant do
It prevents the precipitation of calcium salts directly forming on the membrane surfaces
What rate is hypersperse, anti-scalant added at
Rate of 5ppm
What does CCV stand for
Concentration Control Valve
What does the CCV do
Controls the back pressure of the sea water acting in the Membrane Cushions
What happens when you close the valve of the CCV
The back pressure is increased and the amount of permeate is increased
What happens when the valve opens on the CCV
Reduces the back pressure and the amount of permeate is reduced
