Heavy monsoon rains in Northwest of Pakistan causing rivers to flood and burst banks
Effects
3 months after flood, 7 million Pakistanis still had no proper shelter
5000 miles of roads and railways washed away and 100 bridges
Over 700,000 homes were damaged or destroyed and whole villages swept away
Many suffered malnutrition and lack of clean water
Responses
Charities and aid agencies provided help including Red Crescent
UN’s world programme provided food aid
Pakistan government tried to raise money to help huge number of people affected but they struggled to cope and were slow
Foreign government provided millions of dollars and USA promised $600 million in flood aid
