Primary effects
80000 deaths due to collapsed buildings
Hundreds of thousands injured
Entire villages and thousands of buildings destroyed
Around 3 million became homeless
Water pipelines and electricity lines were broken
Secondary effects
Diarrhoea and other diseases spread due to little clean water
Landslides buried people and buildings
Freezing winter conditions meant rescue and rebuilding operations were difficult
Immediate responses
Tents, blankets and medical supplies were distributed within a month
International aid such as helicopters were bought in as well as teams of people from other countries
People were rescued without equipment or help from emergency services
Long term responses
Around 40000 people relocated
Government money given to people whose homes were destroyed so they can rebuild
New health centres set up
Training provided to build more earthquake resistant buildings
